We want to re-open pathways to the FES 9 Attitudes approach in the UK. That is why we have re-worked the 9 Attitudes instructor course from the ground up and are running it at Loughborough University from 24 to 26 November 2026.
It is a three-day instructor development course for people who already teach physical intervention, and who want a better way to build it in the people they train.
What the 9 Attitudes instructor course covers
Three days, and a course design that has been re-worked from the ground up.
Day one — the 9 Attitudes
Pre-engagement, engagement, resolution. The emphasis is on teaching attitudes rather than techniques, because the attitude is what survives contact with a real situation.
Day two — high-risk control tactics
Control is a resolution attitude, and it has to be earned. The day is built around pressure-based drills and scenario work.
Day three — edged weapon protection
No sugar coating. Honest, workable tactics for the worst case.
The film below sets out what the three days cover.
Who the course is for
The course is designed for PPST trainers, PMVA trainers, and qualified physical intervention instructors. It is led by Zeb Glover and Gerard O’Dea. Places are limited to 14.
Built on the Functional Edge System
Elements of the Functional Edge System methodology have formed the core of our work with over 35,000 healthcare, education and social care staff since 2010. More than 50 PPST trainers from more than a dozen UK police services attended 9 Attitudes-based CPD days in autumn and winter 2025–2026.
We wrote up what trainers took from a three-day FES trainer CPD: Survival Before Control: notes from a trainer CPD.
