Children’s Care Home Physical Interventions: Course Feedback

Children’s Care Home Physical Interventions

Our principal trainer Gerard O’Dea spent four days recently with an organisation involved in the full time care, throughcare and aftercare programme for looked-after children.  The organisation wanted to focus on De-Escalation and Personal Safety skills for staff and allocated 2 days for the training course to run through topics as follows:

Understanding Behaviour and Triggers

– The processes of aggression (Kaplan and Wheeler model)
– Behavioural triggers and the SCARF model
– Primal patterns of group behaviour – ‘Status seeking displays’

Verbal Defense and Influence concepts:

– Defusing and De-escalation of aggression
– Encouraging Compliance, Cooperation and Collaboration
– Beyond Active Listening and the Persuasion Sequence

– Managing Proximity and Body Language Signals

Personal Protection

*Understanding the principles of Reasonable Force
*The Duty of Reasonable Care
*Risk Awareness in Violent Confrontations
*Reflexive Movement for Breakaway and Disengagement
*Survival, Reversal and Escape tactics
