My name is Gary Klugiewicz. I’m the Director of Training for Verbal Defense and Influence, and I train all over the country — with a particular focus on healthcare organisations. In healthcare right now, there’s one concept taking the front row: trauma-informed care.
If you’re a contact professional, you need to learn this term. If you’re a teacher, a nurse, or a police officer — you need to learn this term. Trauma-informed care is about understanding the amount of trauma the person you’re dealing with has experienced in their life, and how that impacts their interaction with you.
You’re not going to know a person’s trauma history initially, but you want to find out as soon as possible. If someone starts overreacting or over-responding to your approach, you need to be able to recognise what could be happening beneath the surface.
Everyone has trauma in their life. They have trauma — you have trauma. Things that have impacted you over time — a serious assault, for example — are going to impact how you respond.
We all know about post-traumatic stress disorder — PTSD. But the point is, it’s not just combat troops who experience it. Police officers have it. Paramedics have it. Nurses have it. Educators have it. Our kids have it.
