Restraint Training: De-Escalation and Breakaway Custom Course Feedback

Our principal trainer Gerard O’Dea spent four days recently with an organisation involved in the full time care, throughcare and aftercare programme for looked-after children.  The organisation wanted to focus on De-Escalation and Personal Saefty skills for staff and allocated 2 days for the training course to run through topics as follows:

Understanding Behaviour and Triggers

– The processes of aggression (Kaplan and Wheeler model)
– Behavioural triggers and the SCARF model
– Primal patterns of group behaviour – ‘Status seeking displays’

Verbal Defense and Influence concepts:

– Defusing and De-escalation of aggression
– Encouraging Compliance, Cooperation and Collaboration
– Beyond Active Listening and the Persuasion Sequence

– Managing Proximity and Body Language Signals

Personal Protection

*Understanding the principles of Reasonable Force
*The Duty of Reasonable Care
*Risk Awareness in Violent Confrontations
*Reflexive Movement for Breakaway and Disengagement
*Survival, Reversal and Escape tactics


Feedback on the course was excellent overall, with numerous staff commenting on the difference in relevance, appropriateness and effectiveness.
