What is Trauma Informed Care?

My name is Gary Klugiewicz. I am the Director of Training of Verbal Defense and Influence and I train all over the country. And I do a lot of training for healthcare organisations. And in healthcare, what’s really taking the front row is this concept called trauma informed care. If you’re a contact professional you had better learn that term. If you’re a teacher, you had better learn that term. If you work in nursing, you had better learn that term. And if you’re in police, you had better learn that term. Trauma informed care talks about the amount of trauma the person you’re dealing with has had in their life and how that impacts their interaction with you.

Now, you’re not going to know that initially but you want to be able to find that out as soon as possible. You want to be able to recognize this if someone starts overreacting, over-responding to your approach, what could be happening. So very simply what we’re talking about here is that everyone has trauma in their life. They have trauma, you have trauma. Things that have impacted you over tim – a serious assault, for example – is going to impact how you respond.

A serious assault could really effect them. We all know about post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD. But the point is it’s not just combat troops. Police officers have it, paramedics have it, nurses have it, educators have it. Our kids have it.

And so very simply, I recommend that you find out all about this because it’s going to impact you in the future  – because we have to take into consideration what trauma that person has had in their life, what the trauma we’ve had in our life, so we can better interact and keep everyone safe.
